Literature Text

My body lies under the ocean;
My body lies under the sea.
My body lies under the ocean.
Bring back my body to me.

The currents' sweet song lulled me under.
The chill and the waves weighed me down.
The currents- they pulled me out further,
And deeper and further to drown.

Bring back, oh bring back,
Bring back what's been lost to me.
To me.
Bring back- Oh, bring back,
Bring back my body to me.

My vision was swimming with sea greens.
My breath bubbled up overhead.
And though lonesome currents did hold me,
I reached for the far shores instead.

Bring back, oh bring back,
Bring back what's been lost to me.
To me.
Bring back- Oh, bring back,
Bring back my body to me.

My ship has gone past the horizon.
My shipmates have left me to sleep.
But what rest is there for a sailor,
Whose vessel is lost in the deep?

My body lies under the ocean;
My body lies under the sea.
My body lies under the ocean.
Please, bring back my body to me.
Sung to the tune of "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean."
~

This song is something I've been meaning to write for a long time. It's based on a well-loved tune that has been around for ages. Yet when I was little, I always misheard the lyrics.

"My Bonnie lies over the ocean" sounded like "my body lies over the ocean."

In my mind, the song was being sung by a sailor who had drowned. He was sad because the tides had carried his body somewhere far away. No grave, no rest- Just a ghost drifting along in the fog. :sniff: The original song is gorgeous, but I was disappointed to find out I'd been wrong.

So here it is. My tribute to the lonely sailor who has been haunting me for years.

If I had misheard the lyrics that way as a child, I think I would've been traumatized (and possibly appalled that someone would sing such a thing so cheerfully). :XD:
